From Concrete Dreams to Broadway Lights: Cumbernauld Musical Theatre Society Staging Joyous 70th Anniversary Celebration.
Cumbernauld Musical Theatre Society (CMTS) presents a new musical production designed to celebrate the vibrant spirit, history, and community of Cumbernauld as it marks 70 years since its designation as a New Town.
The spectacular concert, titled Reprise, will run from November 5th to 7th in Cumbernauld Theatre at the Lanternhouse. Tickets are officially on sale now for what promises to be an uplifting story tracking the parallel evolution of the town and modern musical theatre.
Two Magical Journeys, One Community.
When Cumbernauld was first designated in 1956, it was built on a bold, forward-thinking vision of bringing people together to build a bright future. Fascinatingly, the mid-1950s also marked the spectacular “Golden Age” of the stage, bringing the world timeless and soaring classics.
Reprise tracks these two incredible journeys side-by-side. Just as Cumbernauld has grown, evolved, and blossomed into a thriving, proud community over the last seven decades, musical theatre has undergone its own brilliant transformation. Audiences will be swept along a joyous timeline—shifting from the traditional orchestral magic of the 1950s, through the feel-good pop-rock revolutions of the late 20th century, all the way to the show-stopping, modern West End hits of today.
A Multi-Generational Celebration.
At the very heart of this production is a beautiful human story. The CMTS cast features local performers whose own families moved to Cumbernauld in its earliest decades to help build the town’s foundations.
Now, generations later, these passionate singers and actors are standing on a local stage, using the soundtrack of the decades to celebrate the very community their families helped create. It is a proud, full-circle moment that perfectly captures the enduring, family-focused spirit of the area.
Bringing the “Musical Theatre” to the Lanternhouse
Formed in 2018 as a registered Scottish charity, CMTS shares the exact same community drive that built Cumbernauld.
“This town was built on the idea of community, growth, and shared dreams—and that is exactly what theatre is all about,” says the society. “Reprise is our love letter to Cumbernauld. It’s a celebration of where we’ve come from, the incredible community we are today, and the bright future ahead. We can’t wait to welcome everyone for an unforgettable, uplifting night out.
